What the site has to do
Before any design: who the site serves, what action it exists to produce, what the current one fails at, and what the performance budget is. On a listing or catalogue site this is also where the data structure gets settled — get that wrong and no amount of front-end work rescues it.
- Audience, primary action and success measure agreed in writing
- Technical audit of the existing site, including Core Web Vitals
- Information architecture and URL structure before layouts
- A PageSpeed budget set as a constraint, not an aspiration
