Answer engine optimisation, for the result above the results

Increasingly the answer arrives before the list of links. A snippet, a voice response, a line in an assistant's reply. Winning that position is a different craft from ranking first, and the main requirement is genuinely answering the question instead of withholding it to make someone call you.

  • First 2 lines where the answer must be
  • Real questions from PAA and your sales calls
  • Tracked snippet ownership monitored

Tell us what you need

A senior person reads this and replies within one working day. No call centre, no drip sequence.

Partners & recognition

The stack we work in, the clients we keep

The platforms we build and run campaigns in, and the clients whose numbers we publish with their names on. HubSpot is the one partnership we claim; the rest are tools we use, not badges.

The problem

The page ranks first and nobody reads it

A result can sit at position one and still lose the click, because the answer was already given at the top of the page by somebody else. Ranking and being read have come apart.

Why the answer goes to a competitor

  1. The page never actually answers

Marketing pages are trained to withhold. Three paragraphs of context, then a call to action. An answer engine has nothing to lift, so it lifts from whoever answered in the first sentence — often a competitor with a worse page.

  2. The question is not on the page as a question

Answer engines match questions to text. A section headed 'Our Approach' does not match 'how long does it take'. Using the reader's phrasing as the heading costs nothing and is skipped constantly.

  3. The answer is buried in a long paragraph

Snippets favour a direct response in roughly forty to sixty words, or a clean list or table. An answer embedded in the middle of a two-hundred-word paragraph is much harder to extract, however good it is.

  4. Nobody tracks who owns the snippet

Featured snippet ownership changes hands regularly and does not appear in a normal rank report as anything other than position one. Losing a snippet can halve clicks with no change in reported ranking at all.

What is included

What AEO covers here

Question research, then answering properly, then checking whether you kept it.

Question research

People Also Ask harvested at scale for your category, plus the questions your sales and support teams actually get asked. The second source is consistently better and almost nobody mines it.

Answer-first page structure

The question as the heading, the answer in the next forty to sixty words, then the detail and the nuance underneath. This is the whole technique and it is mostly a matter of being willing to answer.

Snippet format matching

Google picks paragraph, list or table snippets depending on the query. A process question wants numbered steps; a comparison wants a table. Matching the format to what currently shows is a large share of the win.

FAQ blocks and schema

Real questions with real answers, marked up with FAQPage schema. Written to answer completely rather than to tease, because a partial answer gets skipped.

Voice-appropriate phrasing

Spoken queries are longer and more conversational than typed ones. An answer that reads naturally aloud tends to win them, which usually means shorter sentences and fewer clauses.

Entity and business information

Hours, location, services and contact details consistent across your site, Google Business Profile and the directories. Assistants answer a great many local questions straight from this data.

Snippet ownership tracking

Which questions you own, which you lost and to whom. Tracked over time, because it moves and because a standard rank report will not show it.

Content refresh cycle

Answers age. A page that says 'as of 2024' loses to one that is current, and pages holding valuable snippets are worth revisiting on a schedule rather than when someone notices.

Technology

What we use for this

Live results data, because which format wins a snippet changes and cannot be predicted from a keyword tool.

Question research

What people actually ask.

  • ValueSERP People Also Ask extraction
  • Google Search Console query data
  • Sales and support call review
  • Semrush

SERP features

What currently wins, and in what format.

  • Live SERP feature tracking
  • Snippet format analysis
  • Competitor snippet ownership
  • Position tracking

Structure

So the answer can be lifted.

  • FAQPage schema
  • HowTo and Article schema
  • Heading architecture
  • Table and list formatting

Local answers

Where a lot of assistant replies come from.

  • Google Business Profile
  • NAP consistency audit
  • Directory listings
  • LocalBusiness schema

How we work

How AEO work runs

Find the questions, answer them properly, track whether you kept the answer.

Two sources, one of them underused

People Also Ask across your category at scale, and the questions your own sales and support people are asked every week. The second list is almost always more commercially valuable and almost never gets used.

  • PAA harvested across the category
  • Sales and support questions collected
  • Questions clustered by intent
  • Prioritised by commercial value

Format, not just position

For each priority question, what currently holds the answer, in what format, and how long the winning answer is. That defines the target precisely rather than approximately.

  • Current answer owner recorded
  • Snippet format identified per question
  • Winning answer length measured
  • Gaps where nobody owns it flagged

In the first two lines

Question as heading, direct answer immediately under it, detail below. The hardest part of this is usually persuading a stakeholder that giving the answer away is the point rather than a lost opportunity.

  • Question used as the heading verbatim
  • Answer in the first forty to sixty words
  • Format matched to what wins
  • Schema applied where it fits

Because it changes hands

Monthly checks on who holds each answer. Losing a snippet does not show in a rank report and can cut clicks sharply, so it needs its own monitoring.

  • Snippet ownership tracked per question
  • Losses flagged and investigated
  • Answers refreshed on a schedule
  • Click impact measured in Search Console

Why us

Why most pages lose the answer

Not for technical reasons. Because they were written not to answer.

We answer the question in the first two lines

Which sounds obvious and is the thing marketing pages are structured to avoid. The whole technique is being willing to give the answer away before asking for anything.

Format matched to what currently wins

Paragraph, list or table, decided by looking at what holds the snippet today rather than by preference. Getting this wrong loses the position regardless of how good the answer is.

Questions come from your sales calls too

Not only from a keyword tool. The questions a buyer asks on a call are the ones with money attached, and they are sitting unused in your team's heads.

We track ownership, not just ranking

Snippets change hands and a standard rank report will not tell you. Losing one while still ranking first is a real and invisible drop in traffic.

Questions

Answer engine optimisation, answered plainly

Starting with what it is, since the term is newer than the practice.

AED 6,500 to AED 25,000 covers most of what we are asked to build. The number moves on how many question clusters are in scope, whether existing pages are being restructured or new ones written, how many languages, and whether ongoing snippet tracking is included. Anything quoted before those are known is a guess. We scope first, then price, and the scope document is yours whether or not you proceed. These are market ranges rather than a fixed rate card — the proposal carries the real figure.

Structuring content so it gets used as the direct answer to a question — in a featured snippet, a voice assistant reply, or an AI assistant's response. The core of it is answering the question clearly in the first couple of lines under a heading that matches how the question is actually asked.

A page about visa processing that has 'How long does a UAE employment visa take?' as a heading, followed immediately by a direct sentence giving the range and what changes it. The competing page has a section called 'Our Visa Services' and three paragraphs of company background. The first one wins the snippet, and it wins it because of the structure rather than the authority.

It is a part of SEO rather than an alternative to it. You still need a page that can rank before it can win the answer — Google generally pulls snippets from results already on the first page. AEO is the layer on top that decides which of those results gets quoted.

AEO is about winning the direct answer: the snippet, the voice reply, the assistant's response. GEO is about being cited as a source when a generative system composes a longer answer from several places. They overlap and the techniques are related. Worth knowing that Google returns entirely different results for the two terms, with no overlap in the top ten, so treating them as one thing is not quite right.

This is the objection we hear most and the evidence goes the other way. Withholding does not make someone call — it makes them read a competitor who answered. Answering builds the case that you know what you are doing, and the enquiry that follows is better qualified because they already understand the basics.

Direct tracking of who holds the answer for each priority question, checked monthly. Search Console corroborates it — winning a snippet usually shows as a sharp click-through rise at a stable position, and losing one shows as the reverse.

Faster than most SEO work. Restructuring an existing page that already ranks on the first page can take a snippet within two to six weeks. Getting a page onto the first page in the first place is the slower part, and it is ordinary SEO.

Sometimes less, and that can still be the right outcome. A snippet answering a simple factual question may reduce clicks while raising visibility. What we optimise for is winning the answers with commercial intent behind them, where the person still needs to come to you afterwards.

Existing ones first, nearly always. Pages already ranking on the first page are the cheapest snippet wins available, because the hard work of ranking is done and only the structure needs changing.

Yes, and it works cleanly because the work is largely structural — headings, answer placement, schema and FAQ blocks. We coordinate on the pages being touched so nobody overwrites anybody.

No questions match — try another search.
