Every UAE marketing team has now had the same meeting. Someone asks ChatGPT to recommend a supplier in their category, the competitor comes up, and the room goes quiet.

Then comes the harder question: how do we know if this is getting better or worse?

Search Console does not report it. Google Analytics barely does. Most of the tools that claim to solve it are three months old. So here is a method you can run yourself, starting this week, that produces numbers you can put in a board pack without embarrassment.

What you are actually measuring

AI search visibility is not one metric. It is four, and conflating them produces reporting nobody trusts.

Presence. Do you appear at all when someone asks a buying question in your category?

Position. When you appear, are you first in the list or fourth?

Accuracy. When the system describes you, is what it says correct and current?

Sentiment and framing. Are you described as the premium option, the cheap option, the specialist, or as an also-ran with a caveat attached?

That third one catches people out. We regularly find UAE brands being described with a service they discontinued two years ago, or an old address, or a former founder. That is a visibility problem and a reputation problem at once.

Build your question set first

This is the step that determines whether the whole exercise is useful. Do not track generic queries. Track the questions your actual buyers ask.

Build a list of 25 to 50, spread across four types.

Direct recommendation. “Best aesthetic clinic in Dubai for laser treatment.” “Which agencies in Dubai do HubSpot implementation.” These are the highest-value queries and the hardest to win.

Comparison. “Compare the top three property portals in Dubai.” “Is X or Y better for a small UAE business.”

Brand-specific. “What does [your brand] do.” “Is [your brand] good.” “How much does [your brand] charge.” These test accuracy, and they are the ones most likely to be wrong.

Problem-led. “My Google Ads are showing as eligible-limited in the UAE, who can help.” “How do I market a clinic legally in Dubai.” These reveal whether your content is being retrieved for the problems you solve.

Include Arabic versions of at least a third of them. Arabic AI responses in the UAE draw on a shallower source pool, which means the field is emptier and the opportunity is larger.

Run the baseline manually

Before buying a tool, do it by hand once. It takes about ninety minutes and it teaches you more than any dashboard.

Run every question through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Gemini. Use a clean session with no personalisation or memory, and set location to the UAE where possible, because these systems localise.

Record for each: did you appear, in what position, what was said about you, and which sources were cited. That last column is the most actionable thing in the whole exercise — it tells you exactly which pages, directories and third-party articles the system is drawing on, which tells you where to work.

Repeat monthly, on the same day, with the same questions. Consistency matters more than sophistication.

What the source column will tell you

In our experience with UAE brands, the cited sources cluster into a predictable set.

Your own site, if it is crawlable and specific. Google reviews and Business Profile data. Third-party “top 10” listicles, which are used far more heavily than their quality suggests. Sector directories. LinkedIn. And expat community threads on Reddit and forums for anything consumer-facing.

That distribution tells you your workplan. If nothing on your own site is being cited, the problem is on-page structure. If competitors appear in five listicles and you appear in none, the problem is digital PR. If your Google reviews are thin, that is where to start.

The automated layer

Manual tracking does not scale past about fifty questions. Once you have a baseline and you know what you are looking for, automate.

Several tools now track AI answer visibility across the main systems, and most large SEO platforms have added a module. Treat their output with mild scepticism — the space is young and the sampling methods vary — but the trend lines are useful even where the absolute numbers are noisy.

What to require from any tool you evaluate: UAE localisation, Arabic language support, source citation capture, and the ability to use your own question set rather than a generated one.

The proxy metrics in your existing analytics

Three signals in tools you already have.

Referral traffic from AI platforms. Filter for chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. The volume is small. The growth rate and the conversion rate are what matter — AI referrals typically convert well, because the person arrives pre-qualified by the answer.

Branded search volume against organic clicks. AI answers frequently produce no click. The person reads your name and searches it later. Rising branded search with flat organic impressions is often AI visibility working where you cannot see it.

Impressions versus clicks in Search Console. A widening gap on informational queries usually means AI Overviews are absorbing the click. Painful, but measurable, and a signal to move that content toward being quotable rather than clickable.

How to report it

Four numbers on one slide, monthly.

  • AI presence rate: the percentage of your tracked questions where you appear at all

  • Average citation position: where you sit when you do appear

  • Accuracy score: the percentage of brand-specific answers that are factually correct

  • Share of voice: your presence rate against your two closest competitors

Track the same four every month. Do not add metrics because a tool offers them.

Turning measurement into movement

Measurement is only worth the effort if it changes what you build. The usual outputs:

Pages rewritten so the answer sits in the first sentence under a question-shaped heading. Facts made explicit — numbers, licence details, locations, prices, years in operation — because adjectives cannot be cited. Schema corrected. Entity data made consistent across every directory. And a deliberate effort to appear in the third-party sources the citation column revealed.

That is the substance of generative engine optimisation, and it overlaps heavily with answer engine optimisation work.

A note on expectations

AI search referral volume is currently a small fraction of organic search for most UAE brands. Anyone telling you to reallocate your entire budget is overstating the case.

What is not overstated is the direction of travel and the current emptiness of the field. Very few UAE businesses are measuring this at all, which means the ones that start now will have twelve months of trend data and a working method while their competitors are still having the meeting.

Start with the manual baseline. It costs an afternoon.

If you want the baseline run for your category, including the Arabic question set, that is where we begin AI visibility work — see how Dubai businesses should optimise for AI search or talk to our AI team in Dubai.

Common questions

How often should we re-run the baseline? Monthly, on the same day, with the same question set. Consistency matters more than frequency, and shorter intervals produce noise rather than insight.

Do AI referrals convert better than organic search? In our experience they convert well, because the visitor arrives already persuaded by an answer that mentioned you. Volume is low, so judge the channel on conversion rate rather than sessions.

Should we block AI crawlers to protect our content? That is a legitimate business decision, but make it deliberately. Blocking every crawler means you can only be described from third-party sources, over which you have no control.

Which system matters most for UAE brands? Google AI Overviews reach the most people today. ChatGPT produces the most considered shortlists. Track both, and add Perplexity if your category is research-heavy.
