For about twenty years, search engine optimisation meant one thing: ranking on Google's blue links. You built authority, earned backlinks and wrote keyword-targeted content, and people found you when they searched for what you sell. That model still works, but it's no longer the whole picture.

Today, buyers in the UAE are increasingly using AI for questions they used to type into a search box. Google's AI Overviews (once called SGE), Perplexity and Gemini reply in natural, conversational language and often skip the list of blue links altogether. Answer engines like ChatGPT either cite your business or leave it out, and the buyer may never look any further.

That shift has a name, Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO), sometimes called answer engine optimisation (AEO). For Dubai businesses it alters how you earn AI search visibility, and many agencies are still working out what to do about it.

What Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) Means

GEO is the practice of shaping your website and wider online presence so that AI-powered search platforms choose your brand as a trusted source. In plain terms, you want your brand to appear in the AI-generated answers people read before deciding who to talk to.

A patient might ask ChatGPT 'which aesthetics clinic in Dubai treats melasma' and a founder might ask Perplexity for an agency that builds Arabic websites. To respond, these LLMs draw on indexed web pages and their own training data. A business whose pages state clear facts is more likely to be quoted, and thin pages tend to be skipped.

This approach doesn't replace SEO but extends it, and it asks for a different content strategy built around facts rather than slogans.

Traditional SEO is a ranking problem, where you compete for positions one to ten on a search results page. Google decides the order using relevance, authority and technical signals.

Unlike traditional SEO, AI search is a citation problem. The assistant writes one combined reply and may or may not cite you, so there is no position two or seven. You also can't track your place in an AI response, because it shifts with each query's wording, the user's context and model updates.

For Dubai businesses, this has direct commercial effects:

  • A potential patient asking an AI assistant about stem cell therapy in Dubai may get a reply that names three clinics. If your clinic isn't one of them, that conversation happens without you.

  • A business owner using AI tools to find marketing agencies in Dubai may get a short list of names. Agencies with structured, factual content are much more likely to make that list.

  • A family using voice search to ask about real estate in Dubai Marina may hear only a few developers named. Developers whose project pages describe each building clearly give the AI something to quote.

The Factors That Influence AI Citations

When you look at how generative AI systems choose what to quote, a few common factors stand out:

1. Factual Density and Specificity

AI systems favour pages, from service pages to product descriptions, that state specific facts they can check. A blog post that calls a firm 'the agency Dubai trusts' gives an AI nothing to work with. A page that says 'Adnika Growth Agency has offices in Dubai and Stockholm and works in Arabic and English' gives it two facts.

2. Entity Consistency Across the Web

AI systems learn about entities, such as businesses and the people behind them, by combining what different websites say. Keep your name, address, phone number and the way you describe your business the same on your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and directories. When your details are consistent everywhere and kept updated, AI systems cite you with more confidence. This is the core of entity optimization, and it's a sensible place to start.

3. Structured Data and Schema Markup

Schema.org markup goes further than meta tags and makes your pages machine-readable, which helps search engines understand what topic each page covers. Most firms need Organisation and LocalBusiness schema plus FAQPage schema on FAQ sections, and clinics can add the medical organisation type. Together they tell AI crawlers what you do, where you operate and which questions you can help with.

4. E-E-A-T Signals

Experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness still matter. AI systems trained on Google-indexed pages inherit much of Google's view of E-E-A-T. Named authors, case studies, client testimonials and mentions on other websites all help build trust.

5. Question-and-Answer Content Architecture

AI assistants are built for questions, so content that answers one in its first line is more likely to be cited than sales copy. FAQ sections, how-to guides and comparison posts all work this way. A short featured answer at the top, followed by the detail, gives the model a clean passage to quote.

Practical GEO Steps for Dubai Businesses

  • Audit your Entity Footprint: Ask ChatGPT and Gemini the questions your buyers ask and note whether your brand or competitors are mentioned or cited. Then check that your business information matches on Google, LinkedIn and every directory you're listed in. This doubles as a basic AI visibility audit, and it helps you identify the gaps to close first.

  • Implement Schema Markup: Most UAE businesses should start with Organisation, LocalBusiness and FAQPage schema on their core pages.

  • Create Direct-Answer Content: For each service, add an FAQ section to its landing page covering the questions buyers put to AI tools.

  • Build Authoritative Backlinks from UAE Sources: AI systems give weight to trusted local sites. Coverage in Gulf News, Khaleej Times, What's On or trade publications makes a citation more likely.

  • Claim and Optimise Your Knowledge Panel: If your business has a Google Knowledge Panel, claim it and check every detail is accurate.

SEO Is Not Dead. It Is Evolving.

Businesses that abandon traditional SEO in favour of GEO alone will make a costly mistake. Google's AI Overviews still pull from pages that rank, so optimising for AI builds on strong SEO rather than replacing it. In most cases, the businesses cited in AI answers are the same ones that do well in traditional search results.

The work ahead is to widen your SEO strategy so it covers ranking signals and citation signals together.

At Adnika Growth Agency, our SEO services cover traditional and AI-driven search, and we fold them into wider marketing strategies for UAE businesses. The basics stay the same, but each one now has to be done with more care.
