Something changed in how people find businesses, and most UAE brands have not adjusted for it yet.

A prospective patient used to search “best dermatologist in Dubai”, scan ten blue links, click three, and decide. Now a growing share of them ask ChatGPT the same question and get a shortlist of four clinics with reasoning attached. There is no page ten. There is no page two. There are four names, and if yours is not one of them, you were never in the consideration set.

This is not a future problem. Google’s AI Overviews already appear on a large share of informational queries in the UAE, and ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude are collectively taking a measurable bite out of traditional search referrals.

What is actually different

Classic SEO optimised for a ranked list. AI search optimises for a synthesised answer with citations. The mechanics differ in four ways that matter operationally.

Retrieval is passage-level, not page-level. An AI system does not rank your page; it finds the specific passage that answers the question and quotes it. A 3,000-word article where the answer is buried in paragraph nineteen loses to a 600-word page where the answer is the first sentence under a clear heading.

Citation is winner-takes-most. Ten blue links distributed attention across ten sites. An AI answer cites three or four. The tail is gone.

Consensus matters more than authority. These systems weigh whether multiple independent sources say the same thing about you. Being described consistently across your site, directories, review platforms and press is now a ranking input in a way it never quite was before.

The query is longer and more specific. People type differently into a chat interface. “Which clinic in Dubai does thread lifts and has DHA-licensed practitioners with evening appointments” is a real query shape now. It is also a much better lead.

What to change on your site

Answer the question in the first sentence

Structure every page around question-shaped headings with a direct answer immediately underneath. Not a preamble. Not context. The answer, in one or two sentences, then the detail.

This is a writing discipline, not a technical change, and it is the single highest-return adjustment most UAE sites can make. It also improves conversion, because human readers want the same thing.

Publish specifics, not adjectives

AI systems cannot cite “market-leading service and unparalleled expertise”. They can cite “average response time of two hours, DHA licence number, fifteen years in operation, 72 treatments offered across four categories, prices from AED 900”.

Numbers, dates, credentials, named locations, real constraints. The more concrete your page, the more quotable it is. This is why we publish PageSpeed scores and client names in our case studies rather than describing the work in adjectives.

Get your structured data right

Organisation, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage, Product and Review schema, implemented properly and kept accurate. Structured data does not guarantee citation, but it makes your facts machine-legible and it is one of the few levers that is fully in your control. It is standard in our on-page SEO work.

Make the site crawlable by the right agents

Check your robots.txt. A surprising number of UAE sites are blocking GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot or Google-Extended without anyone having made a decision about it — often inherited from a template or a security plugin.

You may have legitimate reasons to block some. Just make it a decision, not an accident. Blocking every AI crawler and then wondering why you are never cited is a self-inflicted wound.

Build entity consistency

Your name, address, phone number, services and description should be identical across your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, industry directories and any listing site relevant to your sector. Inconsistency confuses both the map pack and AI retrieval.

For UAE brands, pay particular attention to the address format, which varies wildly across directories, and to whether your trade name matches your licensed name.

Where AI systems actually get UAE information

Worth knowing, because it tells you where to invest.

Your own site, if it is crawlable, structured and specific. This is the foundation.

Review platforms. Google reviews above all, then sector-specific ones. For clinics, the volume and recency of Google reviews is disproportionately influential in what AI systems say about you.

Third-party listicles and comparisons. The “top 10 agencies in Dubai” articles that SEO professionals have long dismissed as low quality turn out to be heavily used as source material. Being present in credible ones matters more now than it did.

Reddit, Quora and forums. Under-indexed in the UAE compared with Western markets, but growing. Expat community threads are frequently cited for local recommendations.

Wikipedia and Wikidata, for entities large enough to have pages.

The practical implication: your AI visibility programme is partly on-site and partly a digital PR and reputation exercise. It is not purely technical.

How to measure it

You cannot use Search Console for this, and that is the uncomfortable part.

Start with three practical measures. First, run a fixed set of 20 to 40 buying questions your customers actually ask through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews once a month, and record whether you appear and how you are described. Do it manually at first — it takes an hour and it is more revealing than any tool.

Second, check your analytics for referral traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com. It is small today. Its growth rate is the number to watch.

Third, watch direct and branded search volume. AI answers often produce no click. The person reads your name, then searches it later. A rise in branded search with flat organic clicks is frequently AI visibility working invisibly.

What has not changed

Almost everything else. The site still needs to load fast. Content still needs to be genuinely useful. Technical health still gates everything. Backlinks still signal credibility. Local SEO still drives the map pack, which still drives phone calls.

AI search adds a layer; it does not replace the stack. Brands that abandoned SEO fundamentals to chase AI optimisation have generally lost on both.

Where UAE brands have an unusual advantage

The field is empty. Very few businesses in this market have adjusted their content for passage-level retrieval, and even fewer have their entity data consistent across sources. The categories where a small amount of deliberate work produces outsized results right now include clinics, property, professional services, education and B2B industrial.

That window will close, as these windows do. It is open now.

Where to start this month

Pick your twenty highest-value buying questions. Check what ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews currently say about your category and whether you appear. Rewrite your top ten pages so the answer sits in the first sentence under a clear heading. Fix your schema. Audit your robots.txt. Clean up your entity data.

That is roughly a six-week programme and it is the version of generative engine optimisation that actually moves numbers. We have written more on the mechanics in how to get your brand cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity and how Dubai businesses should optimise for AI search in 2026.

If you want the audit run against your own category, send us the URL and the questions your customers ask. Our answer engine optimisation team will tell you where you currently stand.
